Human Traces
Project type
Illustration, Observations
Date
January-April 2024
Location
Boston, MA
For my project “Human Traces” I photograph objects and places around the city that I find intriguing from the point of view of someone who was raised in a very small town. Being from a small town, the landscape did not hold many traces of people and residents kept to themselves in their homes for comfort. Now that I have lived in Boston for almost 4 years I have found how interesting city life can be.
People in the city move so quickly, both physically and in their minds. Sometimes they forget what they have created or lost, already having moved on to what’s next. I capture abandoned buildings, discarded objects, small spaces, corners, cracks, and crevices that other people may not take the time to notice.
Like a cultural anthropologist, I walk the streets, I record the mark-making of humans because simply put, humans are interesting. These pictures show a world, devoid of humans, but full of their actions or lack of, posing questions about why humans do the things they do. Creating a narrative or story in each photograph.
Being where I am from it is easy to slow down and breathe in the small moments. When you’re in the city, you get caught up in all the hustle and bustle. I hope this project shows people it is okay to slow down and appreciate your surroundings, even if you think it’s boring. Stop and look every once in a while, because you might just find something interesting.
